Unlike Messenger, Hangouts still lacks support for Android 7.1’s image keyboards. Following Google Messenger’s lead, three contacts and a new conversation shortcut makes for a better default. While a nice addition that brings feature parity, I would have much preferred that Hangouts show a list of frequent contacts rather than a method to start new messages. “People & Options” has been split into two, with Archive and Delete moved under the latter screen. In a conversation, the overflow menu has been simplified. Additionally, the “New group” option has been merged into the general “New conversation” interface with a redesigned picker. Unlike in the FAB, the chat shortcut does not distinguish between a regular Hangouts conversation and SMS. Unfortunately, having multiple accounts annoyingly brings up the “Choose account” picker every time. Version 14 sees shortcuts for starting new voice, video, and text chats, but still lacks support for image keyboards and sending GIFs.įrom the homescreen or app drawer, users can quickly start a new chat and voice or video call with all three opening up their respective “New conversation” screens. Some may like the convenience of having those icons always on hand, but I’d like the option to have a less congested keyboard. At the top of the keys, there is always a list of icons that you can select as a shortcut to a specific Slash, like sending your current location or accessing GIFs. When you don’t want to use the Slash feature, the keyboard is a bit messy. The same happened when I mentioned getting a burger for dinner. When I typed in the word, “coffee” the keyboard asked if I was looking for a coffee shop and connected me to Foursquare to see choices that are available to me locally. For example, I asked a friend if he wanted to get coffee. This turned out to be more productive than I thought it would be. Open the app and tap “Create a Slash.” Then, add a name (like iDB), and a shortcut to what you want to appear when you type the slash (like The Good If none of the Slash content appeals to you, you can always create your own shortcut. They will receive a link to it via the music-streaming app. For example, you can search Spotify for a specific song and share it with your friends.
